Yes, this sounds to good to be true, but Panasonic have just announced on the 26th October 2020 the results of research by Texcell into their NanoeX air conditioning filter technology.

Over 99.99% of novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) activity was inhibited within 2 hours

Read the full article on the UK Panasonic subsiduary:

Verification of inhibitory effect of nanoe X, technology with the benefits of hydroxyl radicals on novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)

and here on the Panasonic Worldwide website:

Panasonic’s nanoe X helps you brave the new normal with the benefits of hydroxyl radicals proven to inhibit the novel Coronavirus

I personally visited Panasonic Research Labs in Tokyo in September 2019…..long before Covid-19 or Coronavirus were common terms in daily life. They demonstrated the NanoeX filtration in their standard air conditioners. I was astonished at its ability to filter odours and they used strong smelling ammonia to demonstrate this. The research technician also talked in depth about filtering pollen, bacteria and viruses (no mention of Covid-19!). The pollen section caught my attention, as I know this is an increasing problem and we get asked about this regularly in the context of choosing air conditioners. The technician talked at length about bacteria and virus filtration, but to be frank, I sort of switched of at this point, thinking it was of less value to our customers when considering air conditioning systems.

Roll on 12 months…..how wrong was I!

Until now, we have been reluctant and avoided making claims about Covid-19 filtration when promoting Panasonic air conditioning for homes and commercial properties. However, this incredible new research by Texell shows just how good the NanoeX filtration is at achieving this.

There is nothing conventional about NanoeX filtration…..its not a filter or gauze that air passes through like normal air conditioning systems (although Panasonic air conditioners do also have one of these for larger particles and dust capture). Read the article if you are technically minded, but in essence, NanoeX air conditioning filtration uses tiny electrically charged water particles to attract microorganisms. These can be bacteria, fungi, pollen and viruses…..including Coronavirus.

Its a patented technology that we will not see in other air conditioning systems and we expect it to be a major differentiator from the other air conditioning manufacturers.

Pharma Air Conditioning is Important

In the United Kingdom’s highly regulated pharmaceutical sector, maintaining the integrity of medicinal products is paramount. Precise pharma temperatures are not just a matter of best practice; they are a legal requirement, enforced by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), and fundamental to ensuring patient safety. Pharma air conditioning systems are the backbone of this temperature-controlled environment.

The Importance of Temperature Control Under UK Regulations

Pharmaceutical products, from life-saving vaccines to everyday medications, are vulnerable to temperature fluctuations. In the UK, deviating from specified storage conditions can lead to:

Product Degradation: The chemical stability of medications can be compromised, reducing their efficacy and potentially creating harmful by products.

Physical Alterations: Changes in temperature can cause medications to crystallise, melt, or alter their viscosity, rendering them unusable.

Microbial Contamination: Elevated temperatures can encourage the growth of bacteria and fungi, posing a significant risk of contamination.

The MHRA enforces strict guidelines, aligning with European and international standards, that dictate precise temperature ranges for various pharmaceutical products. These typically include:

Cool (8°C to 15°C): Used for specific medications and diagnostic agents, vital for maintaining their stability.

Room Temperature (15°C to 25°C): The standard for most oral medications and non-sensitive products, but still requiring careful monitoring.

Frozen (-25°C to -10°C) or colder: Required for specialised biologics and certain vaccines, necessitating highly reliable freezing systems.

The Essential Role of Pharma Air Conditioning in UK Pharmacies and Storage Facilities

On the 5th June 2017, a news article was published on the BBC website…

How air conditioning changed the world

The article by Tim Harford discussed how instrumental the invention of air conditioning has been to the modern economy. The full article is HERE, but the main points are as follows:

Early printing presses had huge problems with humidity. To solve the problem a young engineer called Willis Carrier figured out that circulating air over coils that were chilled by compressed ammonia maintained the humidity at a constant 55%. The incidental side effect of this was invention of cooling of the air.

The growth of shopping malls and theatres has only been enabled because of our ability to cool enclosed spaces.

Early computer development was only achieve because of our ability to cool the massive temperatures generates by computers. Air conditioning remains a key feature of all large scale computer rooms.

Air conditioning changed the way we build our buildings. The glass fronted high rise buildings that dominate our large cites could not exist without air conditioning.

It also changed our demographics. Its hard to imagine the rise of cities like Dubia or Singapore without air conditioning.

Air conditioning is also responsible for lower mortality rates during heat waves.

It has made us more productive in offices and improved leaning in schools.

With a fast growing market for VRF heat recovery air conditioning technology, the ability to grow operational efficiencies is becoming more of a realisation than simply a design potential.

A typical VRF heat pump system can remove energy from one space and reject it to another, for example when cooling. The energy would be taken away from the indoor space and rejected outside, with all indoor units of only having the option of operating in the same mode – whether that be heating or cooling.

A heat recovery VRF system provides connected indoor units operating in heating and cooling. Energy removed from a room being cooled can be used to heat other rooms, therefore achieving an energy balance. This could potentially reduce energy consumption by 30%

It is also possible to transfer heat to water via equipment such as LG’s Hydrokits. With a system – connection capability matching fan coils, Hydrokits can achieve water temperature of up to 80degrees, have a potential heating capacity of 30kW from a single unit as well as producing cold water down to 6 degrees.

The real system efficiency gain is being operational when other connected items are operating in an opposite mode. It is now common practice for a commercial VRF specification to include some method of Hydrokit application, whether to provide domestic hot water or hydronic heat exchangers inside ductwork.

When designing VRF projects, care should be taken to maximise efficiency gains, taking into consideration water flow rates, water temperatures, and the method of emitters being used.

Whilst most people use a low – loss header or thermal store with a supply of water at a single temperature to provide multiple emitters requiring different temperatures, a variation in leaving water temperature from a Hydrokit will have an effect on how efficiently it is performing.

The Hydrokit has the potential to provide two flow/return water temperatures and output signals to valves to divert the flow. There can be a lower setpoint for underfloor heating and a higher setpoint for portable hot water, which maximises efficiency gains and serving each area as required.

The Hydrokit can regulate its water temperature between points selected at commissioning, enabling heat emitters to avoid overshooting temperature in a design space.

It is selected on capacity and maximum leaving water temperature for the entire load, so efficiency is not maximised. It is usually found that approximately 80% is for space and heating and about 20% is for portable hot water. In most cases, the designation of 100kW of high temperature Hydrokits to reach the temperature required for domestic hot water is unnecessary and increases the capital cost for the project and reduces the potential operating efficiency.

Most of the load would be met using R410A to heat water, with the extra temperature required for domestic hot water being achieved using cascade R134a transfer.

Whilst the development of new technologies is important to maximising energy saving methods, we must fully understand their full potential in terms of application at the initial design stages in order to deliver consistently high efficiencies.

This article is targeted at air conditioning engineers and designers installing VRV air conditioning systems with ducted fan coil units.

Air intelligence have recently completed a large project of this nature for a client in Beaconsfield (Berkshire). Although the installation itself was trouble free, achieving acceptable comfort levels for staff at the site has proved slightly problematic.

A number of problems transpired after the air conditioning installation was completed

With the air conditioning In ‘heating’ mode, the open plan areas were getting much to warm.

With the air conditioning in ‘auto’ mode, members of staff where getting regular dumps of cold air.

The Air Conditioning Equipment

The air conditioning system in question consisted of two 64kw VRV outdoor units connected to around 30 indoor units. The equipment was by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), but we have no reason to believe the issues we encountered would have been unique to this brand.

Fine Tuning Ducted VRV Air Conditioning

It took a fair amount of trail error to alleviate these air conditioning problems and the solutions involved the following

We found that the top boxes on top of the ceiling grills were not getting a good enough seal and a lot if the warmed air was escaping into the ceiling void. This air was then being recycled into the FCUs to be heated further. The temperature in the ceiling void was reaching over 30oC. Replacement top boxes was required to resolve this problem.

By default, the air conditioning FCU fans continued to run at a low level when the set point was reached. Also, the FCUs need to continue to allow a small amount of heated refrigerant into the coils. This was resulting in the FCUs continuing (be it at a low level) to provide heating when the set point was achieved. We understand the logic of doing this is to continue to feed fresh air into the room from the VAM fresh air units. However, to overcome this problem, it was necessary to configure the system to completely switch off the fan when the set point was reached.

The downside of the above was that the fresh air from the VAM units was not being pumped through the air conditioning FCUs. Instead, it was filling the ceiling void and eventually dropping down through the return air grills onto staff below. It was necessary to locate these return air grills to positions away from staff.

When moving the air conditioning return air grills, we made the mistake in some cases of relocating them to positions where the cooler air was dropping onto the controllers. Bearing in mind these controllers are also the temperatures sensors, they were no longer getting an accurate representation of the overall room temperature.

When the air conditioning is in ‘auto’ mode, the system (by default) heats an area until it is 1oC above the set point. After which the heating is turned off. The cooling is only invoked if the actually temperature continues to rise a further 2oC. If this does happen, the cooling is then triggered and keeps cooling until the temperature is 1oC below the set point. After this point, the cooling is switched off. The heating will not be invoked until the temperature drops a further 2oC. This effectively creates a dead band of 6oC. In our case the set temperature was 22oC, but with the dead band, if varied between 19oC and 25oC, which was understandably unacceptable to the client.

Dealing with ‘Auto Mode’ in Ducted VRV Air Conditioning

Firstly, this problem confirmed our general view that the air conditioning ‘auto’ mode is not particularly good at holding temperature and also causes cold drafts.

We did reduce the number of times the system entered cooling by the actions in point 1 in the first section of this report.

We found that the dead band could be configured. Rather than the temperature dropping 3oC below set point before invoking heating, we changed this to 1.5oC. We avoided changing the configuration when the temperature exceeded the set point by 3oC as this would have just increased the number of times cooling was invoked.

We increased the static pressure setting in the controllers so that fan worked harder at all settings. This increase the air circulation and reduced stratification and cold spots in the areas.

Despite all of the above, many areas still worked much better in ‘heating’ mode than they did in ‘Auto’ mode.

Read on to see the latest on commercial RHI......air source heat pumps soon to be added

Commercial and industrial companies have received a boost this month with the planned introduction air source heat pumps to the ‘eligible technology list’. In spring 2014, commercial air source heat pumps will qualify for Renewable Heat Incentive and will receive a rate of 2.5p /kWh. So a smallish office with 20kw of heating running for 10 hours a day in the heating season, would receive around £100 a month in RHI. Along with the significant (usually 30-40%) energy savings from modern equipment, install costs could be recovered in as little as 3-4 years.

At this stage it appears that the new tariffs will only apply to air-to-water heat pump systems. Which is where a conventional heat pump (looks very much like an air conditioning external unit) is used to heat water that circulates in a conventional central heating system. Some companies such as Daikin are now producing air-to-water source systems that also offer cooling for the summer months. Although it must be said that the RHI is only available on heating energy used.

Until 2013, the air conditioning industry used a ‘nominal’ ratio for cooling (EER) and heating (COP) but this resulted in a significant gap between predicted performance and what is actually achieved. Nominal efficiency gives an indication of how efficient an air conditioner is when operating at full load in nominal conditions (not often achieved). To rectify this, a more accurate method – the ‘seasonal efficiency’ ratio (SEER) – has been developed, which gives a better measure of the real-life energy efficiency of systems.

The new seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) takes into account a number of factors, which together provide a much more realistic view of energy efficiency in real life conditions, including:

[ul style=”2″]
[li]Energy performance in different climate zones [/li]
[li]Efficiency at partial load capacity as well as full load [/li]
[li]Energy consumption in auxiliary and stand by modes [/li]
[li]Different load requirements through the seasons[/li]
[/ul]

The new method of rating this energy efficiency is driven by the EU’s Energy Related Products (ErP) Directive which specifies the minimum requirements that manufacturers must integrate into their energy-using products by 2013.

Seasonal Efficiency demands a new rating system for heating and cooling products, which must be used by all air conditioning manufacturers. These are:

[ul style=”3″]
[li]The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) value in cooling [/li]
[li]The Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) value in heating [/li]
[/ul]

SEER and SCOP measure annual energy consumption and efficiency in typical day-to-day use. In the longer term, they take into account temperature fluctuations and standby periods to give a clear and reliable indication of the typical energy efficiency over an entire heating or cooling season.

When purchasing your new or replacement air conditioning systems, ask your installer about complying with the ErP. As a result, they are more energy efficient and therefore emit fewer CO2 emissions.

If your home, shop, or business still relies on an older air conditioning or refrigeration system, there’s a good chance it runs on R22 refrigerant. While once a standard refrigerant in the UK, R22 has since been banned due to its harmful effects on the environment. In this guide, we’ll explain what R22 is, why it’s no longer legal, and what your options are if your system still depends on it. Dept. Environment Sheet RAC 8

What Is R22 Refrigerant?

R22—formally known as HCFC-22 (hydrochlorofluorocarbon-22)—is a chemical refrigerant that was widely used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems installed before 2010. It was once praised for its efficiency and safety profile compared to older refrigerants like R12. R22 works by absorbing heat from one area and releasing it in another, making it ideal for keeping spaces cool and comfortable.

Why Was R22 Refrigerant Phased Out?

Despite its practical benefits, R22 has a serious downside: it damages the ozone layer. As an HCFC, R22 contains chlorine atoms which, when released into the atmosphere, break down ozone molecules. The ozone layer is vital for shielding the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Its depletion has led to increased health risks such as skin cancer and eye damage, as well as negative effects on wildlife and ecosystems.

The global environmental community responded with the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed to phase out substances that harm the ozone layer—including R22 refrigerant.

Key Dates in the R22 Phase-Out (UK & EU)

2010: The sale of new R22 equipment was banned in the UK and across the European Union. However, recycled R22 could still be used for servicing.

2015: The use of all R22 refrigerant, including reclaimed or recycled refrigerant, was completely outlawed in the UK. Systems using R22 could still operate, but could no longer be legally serviced if refrigerant was needed.

2020 and Beyond: The global phase-out continues, with stricter environmental legislation and increased pressure to replace outdated systems.

How Do I Know If My System Uses R22?

If your air conditioning or refrigeration system was installed before 2010, it’s likely to contain R22 refrigerant. You can usually confirm this by checking the manufacturer’s label or rating plate on the outdoor unit. It may list the refrigerant type as:

R22

HCFC-22

Chlorodifluoromethane

Still unsure? A professional engineer can inspect your system and confirm the refrigerant type.

What Happens If I Keep Using an R22 System?

Although operating an existing R22 system is not illegal, continuing to do so carries several significant risks:

1. Unserviceable Equipment

If your system develops a leak or refrigerant-related fault, it cannot be legally repaired using R22. This could leave your cooling system inoperable, especially during peak usage periods.

2. High Operating Costs

Older systems are often far less energy-efficient than modern alternatives. This means higher electricity bills and a larger carbon footprint.

3. Spare Parts Are Becoming Obsolete

Finding replacement components for ageing systems is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive.

4. Insurance and Compliance Risks

Depending on your building’s use (especially in commercial or public settings), continuing to operate an outdated system could put you at odds with insurance or regulatory standards.

What Are My Options?

Now that R22 is no longer legally supported, you’ll need to consider one of the following options:

Option 1: Do Nothing

You could continue using your existing system until it fails. However, this approach carries a serious risk. Once it breaks down, repairs involving refrigerant are not legally permitted, potentially leaving you without cooling for days or even weeks.

Option 2: Retrofit Your System

In some cases, older systems can be adapted to work with a modern refrigerant. This involves flushing the system, changing the oil, and replacing certain components like the expansion valve or compressor.

Advantages:

Cheaper than full replacement

Quicker turnaround

Disadvantages:

Not all systems are compatible

Energy efficiency may not improve significantly

Still based on outdated technology

Option 3: Replace the System

The most future-proof and environmentally responsible option is to replace your old system entirely with a new one designed for modern refrigerants like R410A or R32.

Advantages:

Up to 50% more energy-efficient

Lower environmental impact

Though the upfront cost can be higher, long-term savings on energy bills and reduced maintenance often make this the most cost-effective solution.

Financial Benefits of Upgrading

Energy Efficiency: Modern systems use less electricity to achieve better performance, which can lead to significant savings over time.

Tax Relief and Incentives: Certain commercial systems may qualify for capital allowances or government-backed energy efficiency schemes.

Legal and Environmental Responsibilities

Continuing to operate an R22 system doesn’t just pose operational risks—it also raises environmental concerns. Businesses especially have a responsibility to ensure their buildings meet environmental compliance standards. Non-compliance can affect reputation, customer trust, and even result in penalties.

If your system leaks, not only can it no longer be serviced legally, but the leak itself may be in breach of environmental regulations due to the emission of harmful gases.

Why Upgrade Now?

Waiting until your R22 system fails will only increase costs, downtime, and inconvenience. Replacing your system proactively:

At the end of 2014, R22 refrigerant will be banned under EU legislation. So air conditioning systems with R22 gas will effectively become redundant as any loss of gas cannot be replaced. It is estimated that there are still over 200,000 R22 systems still in operation, but the main reason for companies delaying implementation of R22 replacement programmes is, putting it simply, the cost.

That may be about to change with a revolutionary leasing scheme being launched by Toshiba. This scheme allows businesses to pay for R22 replacement air conditioning equipment from the savings it makes in electricity.

They claim that in most cases there is no cost involved. According to David Dunn, Toshiba Air Conditioning commercial director “ Toshiba’s new lease scheme enables businesses to replace aging R22 plant with new high efficiency air conditioning in a budget neutral way.”

He goes on to say “The savings in running costs in the vast majority of cases pay for the lease costs on the new equipment, giving up to seven years peace of mind – plus high quality heating and cooling for building occupants.”

As with many of the latest air conditioning systems, the key to the scheme is the use of high efficiency R410A equipment to replace old R22 systems. The new plant uses much less energy to deliver the same cooling and heating to a building, dramatically reducing the user’s energy bills. They claim that in most cases, the monthly saving in running costs will equal the lease costs for the new equipment, making the replacement programme budget neutral.

It is a revolutionary way of not just resolving the R22 headache, but also to encourage commercial companies to reduce their carbon footprint now, rather than waiting until they can afford the capital investment. In many ways, this scheme reflects the ideas proposed in the governments ‘Green Deal’. The government wants businesses to install modern air conditioning (and heating), then pay for it through their electricity bill, based on the savings that are made in electricity. Where the ‘Green Deal’ differs from the Toshiba scheme is that the ‘Green Deal’ proposes that businesses pay back the investment through their electricity bills (see our article How the Governments “Green Deal” affects UK businesses).

In principle we really like what Toshiba are doing here and I very much expect that the other manufacturers will follow suit with schemes of their own. Toshiba have sweetened the deal even further by offering warranties for up to 7 years on the leased equipment, removing uncertainty on servicing and maintenance costs and delivering guaranteed monthly expenditure for budgeting purposes.

Toshiba already reports keen interest in the scheme from a number of major end users operating national estates still dependent on R22-based air conditioning. A key attraction in the current economic climate is that the scheme solves the R22 problem without requiring upfront investment in capital costs. Our only observation at this stage is that the equipment cost of a new installation is often only a 1/3 of the overall cost. So do the lease payments factor in all the other costs associated with a new install – I would expect so, but you will need to read the small print?

There is also a counter argument that it may be worth waiting to see the exact shape and form of the Governments ‘Green Deal’ as it is finalised later in the year. Although, don’t hold your breath – its already been delayed more than once and time is running out to replace those old R22 systems.
